How to Get Crayon Out of the Dryer: The Winner of the Blue Ribbon Blog Contest
Merry Christmas to everyone! First things first, I want to announce the winner of the Blue Ribbon Blog Contest for the Winter 2011. Competition was pretty fierce and I was impressed again by how many people participated and the quality of the posts that were sent in. The criteria called for posts that really shared something helpful and informative and I selected the winner...She is Melanie from Adventures in Frugalness She taught me about getting crayon out of the dryer and that is something EVERY mom will need to know at some point, so I suggest we all pin this on Pinterest!! The runner-up is Tessa from The Diary of a Working Mother. Her post is about feeding her little guy and it's something I hope every parent will read at some point because it really makes you think. I look forward to the next contest in the Spring. Until then, Happy Blogging Everyone!!
Melanie's Bio
Hey there everyone.
I am so happy to be featured here at A Mommy With A Selective Memory, and honored to be the recipient of her awesome Blue Ribbon Blog Award.
My name is Melanie.
I am the co-creator or 4 rambunctious boys, a SAHM (to those aforementioned boys), a long-winded author of way too many blogs...one of which is named Adventures in Frugalness (he he he), and a plethora of many other things.
I started Testosterone Overload, just over four years ago, as a way to keep in touch with family and post pictures of my boys (only 3 then). Besides the addition of one more XY, Testosterone Overload has definitely evolved from where it started.
I've learned through the years that in order to keep up with my "brood of manliness" I have to A. keep the pantry shelves stocked at all times (I "coupon"...well, sometimes) B. know how to repair anything (especially clothing) with, and sometimes without, duct tape and C. find ways to save money on just about every other aspect of "in-home engineering" you can think of, in order to keep a roof over our heads.
I have lovingly dub these money (and/or life) saving ideas, my "Adventures in Frugalness". It just so happens that the post I submitted for the MWASM's Blue Ribbon Blog Contest just happened to be one of them. It may not have saved me money...or saved my life...but hopefully, because of my research, it can do both for you (if you ever find yourself in a similar situation).
So, without further ado...
Melanie's winning blog post
HOW TO: GET MELTED CRAYON OUT OF CLOTHES First of all...let me say that if you are searching out this topic because you have a similar problem...I am sorry. Very sorry. Now...where to begin. Well...if you recall, last week I was having a peaceful, stress-less morning until I opened up the dryer and found black crayon melted all over an entire extra large load of laundry (see Help! I need you....Crayon vs Dryer). JUST GREAT! A part of me...a very LARGE part of me...wanted to just condemn the clothing and chuck 'em. But...
Honestly...like I said, I tried a LOT of products.
First, I tried this...
![]() | ||||||
| Pro-Tek (a non-toxic all purpose cleaner--safe for laundry) and Clorox 2
This...
This...
and...eventually....I did try this...for the sake of research
|
PRE-WASH
POST LAUNDERING--PRE-SCRUBBING
WELL...look at it now.
POST LAUNDERING-POST SCRUBBING-POST SECOND LAUNDERING
TA-DA!
There are still a few very faint stains. I will probably have to put it through the scrub/laundering process one more time before it is fit to wear but a VAST improvement I must say.
It was Roberto's favorite work shirt. He almost cried when he first saw it (he he he) but now he is just as hopeful as I am that he will be able to wear it again very soon.

Tessa's Bio
Tessa is a full-time working (outside-the-home) mother who is
learning to integrate "work" and "life" into one seamless operation.
She is the mother to Roland, her 21 month old son, married to her
high-school sweetheart and is a Program Manager for an IT
corporation. Her blog is titled 'The Diary of a Working Mother' and is
focused on challenges of working, raising a little one, some lessons
learned along her journey of life (The Picky Eater!) and a few recipes.
Until today, I was thoroughly confused as to how Roland could be a good eater throughout the day, and yet such a picky eater at dinner time. Dinner time is not pleasant. At all. At least, not pleasant 80% of the time. And thus, I often wonder if we're putting our kiddo to bed hungry...
He loves a wide variety of food including avocados, greek yogurt (referred to as "Yo-Yo"), salmon patties and asparagus (yeah, I know...not the typical foods you would think a 1.5 year old would like). We sat down for dinner tonight hopeful that the left over beef braciole would be a hit, but were not surprised when he pushed it away and said "Noooooo".
As I was preparing his lunch/snacks for tomorrow, I calculated the calories in his favorite daily sandwich - the PB&J. 340 calories between 1tbsp of jelly, 2tbsp of peanut butter and the bread! I started to wonder how many calories he consumes throughout the day. By the time we reach 4:00 PM, he consumes nearly 1100 calories! I did some research on the internet at found out that he should be consuming 1000 calories in a day. (Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Appendix 6) Perhaps he's just not hungry for dinner, and we were interpreting his lack of hunger as a picky 1.5 year old!
That makes sense. The fact that he eats a wide variety of foods throughout the day and doesn't appear to be interested at dinner supports my new found hypothesis. It could also explain why Roland gets up so early in the morning (5:30 am after a 7:30 pm bedtime); it could be that he's hungry! I plan to test my hypothesis throughout the week and will report back next Sunday to see if my new theory holds.
(I am by no means a calorie counter (in fact, if asked today, couldn't even tell you how many calories I should be consuming); I do know how important it is for Roland to get the proper nutrition so that he can grow mentally and physically.)

Announcing the Winner of the Funniest Mommy Blog Post
Today I am going to announce a winner and a runner-up. The winner will get the code to display the following button on their website:
Without further ado....the winner is...
What's Up Sippy Sup
It was an ordinary evening at our home. My husband had just gotten home from work, I was starting dinner and our 2 year old was playing with her little pink kitchen set in the room adjacent to our kitchen. How Leave it to Beaver of us, right? Somewhere between flipping the chicken and prepping the veggies, we notice our daughter’s chin is purple! Her entire chin was purple, with little red spots. I quickly scanned the room for the culprit. No markers, no grape juice…nothing out of the ordinary. Still under the impression that she got something on her chin, we did what all good parents would do and gave her a bath.
While my husband was giving her a bath, I did the second thing that all good parents do and Google “purple rash on kid’s chin.” Worst idea ever! At this point she had everything from Leukemia to Measles to Syphilis. I hurry back to the bathroom and advise my husband to quickly remove her from the tub because “it says we have to seek medical help immediately.” Consumed with worry, trying not to puke from the knots in my stomach, we drove to the kids urgent care clinic near our house.
We’re now in the examining room. The nurse pleasantly took my daughter’s vitals (all normal), but I swear she couldn’t stop staring at the purple chin in wonderment. That gives you the warm fuzzies. Then the doctor comes in. She examines the purple chin, she takes a closer look at the red dots, she looks up at us and says, “Let me get the other doctor in here to take a look.” Holy crap. At this point, I have the sweats and the shakes, along with my twisted stomach. And I’m petting my daughter’s head like some sort of weirdo. Meanwhile, my husband is playing the delicate roll of calming the mother/wife and entertaining the child. Then the second doctor comes in. He gets down on my daughter’s level and gives the purple chin a once-over. Then he gives her whole body a once-over, looking for other mysterious purple blobs. There were none to be found. He explained that the purple blob was a bruise and the red dots were broken blood vessels. It was at this point that he reassured us that it was not Leukemia, Measles , Syphilis or anything else Google said (I’m sure doctors hate Googling parents. I’m sorry to all the doctors out there, I couldn’t help it). He asked us if she had been playing with the vacuum cleaner attachment, suctioning her chin. Yeah, because that’s such a great toy for a 2 year old, we play ‘suck your face off with a vacuum’ all the time. We quickly put that theory to rest. He then asked if she was drinking from a regular cup and was suctioning it to her chin, thought he admitted he typically saw that in much older children. That was a good thought but she is still a sippy cup carrier, so we poo-pooed that theory as well. We left the doctor’s office, reassured that it wasn’t serious but still unsure of what actually caused the purple chin.
Back at home, the dinner was cold, we were still unsettled and my daughter’s chin was still purple. My husband and I paced around the kitchen, like Sherlock Holmes and Watson, trying to figure out what could have caused the purple chin. We were looking over at our daughter, puzzled, while she was back at play in her little pink kitchen. She turned to look back at us, with big bright eyes, sensing our stares. And when she turned around, her arms were at her sides and there was a little pink teacup stuck to her face, covering her little purple chin perfectly. We all stood there in silence, staring at one another. She giggles and the cup falls to the floor. Mystery solved.
This is a wonderful website. They also sponsor a great community on The Blog Frog. I recommend you go join up!

Blog contest for all Mommy Bloggers
It can be something that was really embarrassing. It can be something your kid ruined. It can be stories about your kid eating bugs like this (my kid really did try to eat this bug, see the story behind this bug...:)
It can be stories about your son wearing earrings like this. Check out his finger...doesn't it look like he's flipping me off? I feel confident that he'll appreciate this picture later in life. I did not plan this picture in any way. I swear. (see the story behind this picture)
The rules are simple:
1. Join my site by becoming a follower or signing up for email alerts
2. Send me an email with your story to mommywithselectivememory@gmail.com. The story should be 250-500 words and should be well-written and funny. Pictures are optional, but probably helpful.
3. It can be something you already posted to your blog, it doesn't have to be new. Just make sure you join the site and keep it under 500 words (Or at least close to 500, I won't be that strict)
I will announce the winner and post the winning entry on Sunday, October 16th. If you are the winner, I will contact you for a Bio and will include it along with links to your blog and will also post the winner on my Twitter and Facebook accounts to give maximum exposure.
Good luck! Can't wait to read your stories!!

Extending deadline for contest and a few other announcements
On another topic, you may have noticed the survey posted to the website. The topic was whether or not we should force our kids to eat. 8 out of 9 people agreed that we should NOT force our kids to eat. I will be posting a new survey this week.
Lastly, make sure to check out some of the new pages. I have a section on products I like and products I hate and I would love to get your thoughts on whether you agree. I also have a new section on birthday ideas for different age groups. I'd really like to get input on this. Also, my kids are only 3 and 1, so I need ideas for older kids! Tell me your thoughts!
